Our History

Messiah Ministries was birthed in the heart of Rev. Tommy Hays during his transition from theological seminary to practical ministry near the end of 1997. Through his own journey of personal inner healing and spiritual transformation he learned the Lord had gifted and called him to minister that same healing love of God to others. Originally prompted to leave his law practice for theological training, he was now inspired to leave the more traditional path of ministry to form the healing prayer ministry that would become Messiah Ministries.

Rev. Hays was ordained with the Global Methodist Church. Then under special appointment from his presiding Bishop, was released to his own ministry rather than ministering in a local church. He was certain he was called to reach out to people, churches, and communities of all denominations, streams, and traditions of the Body of Christ. So in 1998, with much prayer and the help of his spiritual mentor and a Christian counselor, Messiah Ministries was born for the purpose of seeing people set free from everything that would hold them back from being all God created them to be.

Through prayer, the Lord named this ministry “Messiah Ministries” based on the prophecy of Isaiah 61. That prophesy was fulfilled by Jesus in Luke 4, and continues to be fulfilled by the Body of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. “Messiah” in the Hebrew language and “Christ” in the Greek language mean “the anointed one.” Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom of God and to demonstrate it in the power of God. His ministry is now our ministry—healing the brokenhearted, setting the captives free, teaching what He taught, doing what He did, in the power that He had. As the Father sent the Son, so the Son sends us through the power of the Holy Spirit (John 20:21).
